When I vote, I assess a candidate's character and their platform. For their platform, I read through their campaign website and highlight what I agree and disagree with. This gives me a quick overview of how aligned I am with the candidate.

I enjoy this method because it gives me more depth than many other news sources I use. I believe this method of highlighting written text can help people identify their political beliefs, as well as compare them to others. So, I coded up Overlllap.

p.s. Let me know of any ideas or features you would find valuable, or if you would like to contribute. There's still lot's of work to be done here. I've included a few of my ideas below.

  1. Automate the import of a candidate's platform
  2. Give an overall "sentiment score" for a set of highlights
  3. Create a way to share one's highlights with others directly from the site (probably need to add a database)
  4. Possibly, host "vip" highlights, i.e., your favorite political commentator's or politician's set of highlights
  5. Maybe, data collection so a politician can assess what parts of their platform are popular or unpopular, but I fear this could lead to some sketchy behavior.
